Powercolor HD6870 1Gb Graphics Card

Review ~  Powercolor HD6870 1Gb Graphics Card

PC games of today are demanding more and more graphics grunt to power their pixels , so does the Powercolor HD6870 1Gb stand up to the task , or does it fail to impress.

Powercolor are not a company i have ever used before to power the graphics of my system as i have long relied and trusted on Sapphire and their VaporX variants for such tasks. But i was open and willing to try another graphics manufacturer, and so i took the plunge an ordered one.

First thing to notice on arrival is the box is rather small,  enough to hold the card and accompanying extras and nothing more. Something i have noticed with other card manufacturers is that they like to use huge box's for relatively small cards, so Powercolors sensible use of cardboard is a refreshing change, and saves a few trees in the process no doubt.

The HD6870 uses the Barts XT 40nm GPU core with 1Gb of GDDR5 memory on a 256bit bus ( 134.4Gbps bandwidth ) which gives it ample grunt for a mid range card. All the usual Ati ( sry AMD ) features are present, like the ability to use upto 4 displays straight out of the box, featuring 2 x DVI 1 x HDMI and 2 x Mini display port. The GPU on this Powercolor model is set at 900Mhz which is quite nippy when compared to other mid range cards and the memory is at 4200mhz effective at stock. The cooler is the standard generic blower style cooler, although not as exciting as some coolers ( Twin Frozer for example ) it does perform reasonably well if a little on the noisy side. Direct X 11 is the standard with this card so all top modern tittles can be shown in full glory.

For alot of gamers the need for higher and higher FPS is becoming greater and greater, thankfully the HD6870 doesn't disappoint and in my system at least has proven to play along side cards of higher spec in most of today's modern tittles. Playing through Battlefield Bad Company 2 my eyes lit up to see frame rates at a steady 50-70 with all the eye candy on ! I personally don't play with AA on at all as i use a 1920x1080 22" monitor any AA i use would be pointless and make my card work harder with no distinguishable result. So with AA off i save the card some work which it can better be put back to work on effects and DX11 glory that i have come to enjoy. The new Tessellation and DX 11 features are definitely worth upgrading for as detail is everything and the HD6870 can certainly provide.

The HD6870 is a very competent card that can put some higher cards to shame, so if you are on a tighter budget then this card certainly wont disappoint. The DX11 features and new Tessellation provide a new level of realism to modern tittles and old ones alike, playing through Crysis 2 and the BF3 open Beta were an absolute treat with every shadow and terrain detail bursting through the screen. In the time Ive had the card it has proven itself a worthy contender amongst  the array of cards on offer today. The frame rates on this card in every game i have played have been reasonable and stutter free which is something of a surprise as i didn't expect the card to perform quite so well. So if your on a budget and wondering if this card is a worthy contender for your next system upgrade then the answer is a thorough yes !

Corsair H60 Quick review

Welcome to my quick review of the Corsair H60 CPU Cooler.

Keeping your PC cool is not necessary a major priority for most PC users, but for the gamer or overclocking enthusiast it is a must. Whilst the market is saturated with an array of different cooling choices the H60 stood out to me as one that id like to have in my system, the question is would you like it in your system ?

The Corsair H60 comes in a nicely packaged box with plenty of pictures of said product boasting it's ability to cool with new "micro channel technology". Inside we find the cooling unit, a 120mm Fan, mounting brackets for AMD/Intel cpu's, and of course the usual paperwork that accompanies all new products. The cooler does look good i have to say, the black low profile looking water block & pump and Corsair logo give it a very appealing finish more so than the Coolit ECO ALC cooler which looks like a big black block.

Installation is relatively simple and most users should not have any difficulty installing the cooler, however there is one little caveat. I did find that the water block itself does fowl some of the motherboard components surrounding the CPU area and so didn't allow me to mount it with the corsair logo facing the right way. I did try on a second motherboard but alas the same result, so be aware that you may not be able to install it with that lovely logo facing the right way !

One of the new features of the Corsair H60 is the micro water channel built into the water block , this is supposed to improve water flow across the cpu and increase cooling efficiency. Sometimes new features on PC products are purely a gimmick or something superfluous to the design, but in the case of the H60 this is one that actually works.
The 120mm supplied fan is of good quality and fairly effective with this cooler but it is a little noisy, i would recommend swapping it out and using two quieter fans in push/pull configuration. The radiator and tubing are of very good quality, the tubing itself is very strong and can bend quite alot allowing for different mounting positions of the radiator.

So... does it work ???

Test System

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.70Ghz ( Stock 2.4Ghz )
Asus P5G41 Motherboard
OCZ Intel XMP Extreme Ram 4Gb 1333mhz
HD6870 1GB
Antec TP650w PSU
Spinpoint F3 500Gb HD

Room temp 21-25c

The cooler proved very effective at removing heat from my mildly overclocked Q6600, with load temps at 45-49c and idle temps at 25-30c. The lowest temp i recorded at idle was a very chilly 17c , so does it work ? Well yes it does ! For this test i used two 120mm fans in push/pull configuration on their lowest speed setting and as the results show the micro channel technology does help at keeping temps in check. To measure temperatures i used Realtemp , Coretemp , and Everest all showing the same result.

If your looking for a new cooler or just want something that is more effective then i would definitely recommend this cooler as one of the top choices for you next system upgrade. The Corsair H60 looks good without a doubt, but it is also backed up by brilliant results which makes for a refreshing change to see something that can please the eye and work effectively. The only let downs with this cooler are the noisy supplied fan and the fact that it might not mount the right way up on your motherboard, but if you can live with these then its a top choice !
